When you’re planning your next hiking trip, adequate hydration should be a main consideration. You will need water to drink as well as some water for food preparation. Carrying multiple bottles or a large gallon jug is not ideal because of its weight in your pack. This is why water purification systems have become one of the must-haves for hiking enthusiasts. The three main types of water purification for hiking are boiling and chemicals, filtering units, and bottle filters. This article will help you choose the right method for your next hiking trip.

Boiling is one of the simplest and most effective forms of water purification, but it not widely used. Hikers sometimes find this method difficult because it requires building a campfire, and waiting for water to cool. Boiling also leaves any particulates or chemicals in the water. Adding chemical treatments is also a traditional water purification method. Like boiling, this method will not remove particulates and requires a waiting period before drinking.

Filtration units can be easier for hikers who do not want to build campfires or carry cookware. These units will remove virtually all contaminants except for some chemicals. These units are very effective, but could leave you stranded if they become clogged on the trail. They are somewhat heavy and a backup purification option is recommended when using these units.

If you are looking for a light weight alternative to filtration units, bottle filters are a great option. They are easy to use and will take up less space in your pack. You simply fill the bottle with water, and when you squeeze it to drink the filter is activated. A backup method of purification is recommended with bottle filters and filtering larger quantities of water for food prep may be difficult.

Different water purification methods have positives and negatives. Choosing boiling/chemicals, filtration units, or bottle filtration will depend on the type of hike and personal preference. Carrying a primary method and a backup method is a smart and safe way to go on any hiking trip.

When you are purchasing a hiking backpack, it is helpful to know what types of packs you can choose from. Backpack types are categorized by make, function, and size. In this article I will explain each category to help you choose the right hiking backpack.

The make of the backpack involves what materials it uses, and whether or not the backpack has a frame. Packs with lightweight materials and foam support are designed to carry a few day hike items, while others with aluminum or plastic frames are designed for heavier loads and weekend hiking trips. A backpacks frame can be inside or outside of the pack depending on comfort. Some backpack makes will be better than others depending on what function your using them for.

It is important to think about the activities you’ll be doing when looking at different types of packs. Hiking can also involve biking and or climbing portions that will affect what kind of pack you need. Some backpacks have special compartments for camel packs and food while others are designed to carry climbing equipment. Determining the function of your pack will also involve choosing the right size.

Hiking backpack sizes vary from 1,000 cubic inches to 7,000 cubic inches. Smaller packs would be sufficient for day trips while a larger pack can carry overnight or other special equipment. Larger packs also tend to have internal or external frames to comfortably support their weight. Overloading a small pack will put painful pressure on the users shoulders while larger framed packs shift some of that weight to the lower back and hip area.

Ultimately, when you’re looking at hiking backpacks you will see packs with mixing combinations of type, function, and size. Thinking about the type of hikes you are planning and trying on potential packs will help you choose the right one.

Dangers can be encountered on the trail at any time, and a survival kit will help you stay safe until help arrives. When choosing or making your kit you will want to consider weather conditions/elements, food and water, and first aid/communication. In this article I will explain what basic items are needed to feel safe on your next hiking trip.

The weather conditions of an area can change with the seasons, and some areas have fluctuating weather during the day and night. Light waterproof clothing and blankets are recommended. You will also want to consider packing a warmer aluminum blanket if the temperature is cold or tends to drop at night. If you are in doubt, ask a local expert about the necessary items.

Food and water will be vital to stay hydrated and keep your energy up in an emergency situation. Make sure to pack an adequate amount of water for your trip or a water purification system. Also, pack an emergency stash of light, nutrient dense food. If all else fails, a pocket knife and pack of waterproof matches can help you obtain and cook food until help arrives. Another danger on the trail can be injury and infection.

A first aid kit is essential to safety on the trail. If you are injured, it will provide immediate treatment while you wait for help. First aid kits can be purchased, but you will want to add personal items such as prescription medications, epi-pens, and sunscreen. First aid kits should also include a way to signal for help. Flashlights, small lanterns, and sometimes flares can help rescuers find your location.

Whether you purchase or make your own survival kit, it will be an essential part of your pack. Focusing on weather conditions, food and water, and first aid/communication will make a quality kit for your next trip. These kits can mean the difference between rescue and death, so take your time and pack wisely!

Like adults, children should have an excellent pair of hiking shoes or boots for these family outings. When purchasing children’s hiking shoes or boots, it will be important to consider fit, durability, and traction. This article will point out the unique needs of children for hiking shoes and boots.

Children are different from adults because their feet are in the process of growing. Its wise to choose a pair of boots or shoe that are one size larger than the child typically wears. This will give their feet room to grow. The child should be able to wiggle their toes freely in the shoe with a firm, but comfortable fit. For this reason, it will be vital to try on the shoe or boot before your purchase. Durability can be unique for children as well.

Unlike most adults, a child will gladly jump into any puddle or pile of mud they see while on the trail. A child’s tendency to be messy and explore should be considered when choosing the durability of a shoe or boot. Choosing a waterproof pair is highly recommended. It is also recommended to purchase a pair from a reputable brand that can guarantee durability. The adventurous nature of children also requires a shoe built for safety.

A safe hiking shoe or boot for children will have excellent traction. Shoes with poor traction can cause slip in falls in wet areas that children like to explore. Growing children also encounter difficulties with balance on the trail. A shoe or boot with excellent traction will help reduce falls on rough terrain.

When purchasing hiking boots or shoes for your child, put yourself in their shoes! Try to imagine what types of issues they will encounter that can affect fit, durability, and traction. A quality pair of children’s hiking shoes or boots can mean a quality hiking experience for you and your family.

Knowing what type of hiking you will be doing, typical weather conditions, and how to choose the right fit are the three main criteria to use when making your purchase. In this article I will explain how to use these three points to make a hiking boot selection.

Choosing the right hiking boots is impossible without first considering what type of hike you will be making. Hiking boots range from light weight mixed fabrics, to leather or heavy leather and plastic mixes depending on how heavy of a hike you will be doing. Light weight boots will be fine for day hikes, while backpacking and heavier terrain requires a boot that’s made of durable leather. Typical weather conditions will also affect your boot choice.

Are you planning on a mid winter hike or one in warmer weather? Different types of boots are made to withstand these weather conditions. If you are looking for a breathable boot in warmer weather, a light weight mixed fabric is the best choice. However, if you are planning on encountering rain or heavy moisture, you will need a waterproof leather boot. There are also plastic boots with fabric lining to keep feet warm in cold winter hikes. Once you’ve determined hike type and weather conditions you will be ready to choose a size and try on boots.

The size of hiking boots will generally be one to two sizes bigger than your usual shoe size. You will need the extra room for thicker socks and swelling of the feet in warmer weather. The best way to find the right size is to bring your hiking socks when trying boots on, and trying each pair out generously before making a purchase. Stairs and ramps are good testing areas before making a final decision.

When the three main criteria of type of hike, weather conditions, and the right fit are used the odds of choosing the right boot are greatly increased. If you find a pair of boots that meet your custom criteria, you can be confident that your purchase is the right one for your hiking needs.

A tent can be a great escape from the elements on any hiking trip. There are a variety of tents available, but only a few tents that appropriate for hiking. When looking for a good hiking tent there are a few important things to consider. A hiking tent should be chosen based on space, weight/prep, and durability. This article will suggest what to look for in each of these categories.

The space desired in a hiking tent can depend on many things. It is important to consider how many hikers will be attending the trip, and what you plan to store inside of your tent. If you are planning on storing your gear inside of you tent, you will need to purchase an extra long tent or one made for an additional occupant. Next to space, weight and prep will be two important considerations in choosing a tent.

When your hiking all items must be carried. You will want to choose a tent thats light and fits comfortably in your pack. In general you will want a tent that is 5lbs or less counting all poles and covers. If you are hiking in a group, tent pieces can be split up among hikers. Ease of setup will also be important on a hike. If you encounter bad weather you will want to be able to prep and use your tent quickly. Tent durability can also be an issue if bad weather arises.

Hiking tents will have a variety of options that include rain covers and all weather protection. A rain cover is highly recommended because rain can come at any time on the trail. Its also important to check the strength of the tent fabric and construction of its poles. High winds and harsh weather can topple weak tents.

After considering space, weight/prep, and durability, other options like color and compartments will add personal flare to your purchase. A quality and light weight tent can make all the difference in any hiking trip.

Hiking shoes and boots are made differently depending on your age and gender. If youre a woman looking for hiking shoes, its important to buy a pair designed for your unique needs. You will want to compare fit, comfort, and durability based on your personal hiking boot needs. This article will explain some of the unique needs of women for hiking shoes and boots.

Women tend to need a different type of fit in hiking shoes and boots. A good pair will be snug on the foot and provide excellent ankle support. Womens hiking shoes will be narrower and provide more arch support than shoes made for men. Having the right fit will prevent blisters and slips and falls on the trail. Firm support is important, but you will also want your hiking shoe or boot to be comfortable.

Hiking shoes or boots should always be tried on in person to feel for fit and comfort. A big issue for comfort in womens hiking shoes, is their weight. A heavy shoe can reduce the distance you are able to hike. In general a good pair of womens hiking shoes will be of a light or medium weight.

The durability of your hiking shoes or boots is relatively the same for men and women. Leather shoes will require some maintenance, but provide water resistance and a long span of use. Some lighter weight fabrics can be great for air flow, but will not last as long. Consider what weather or elements you will be encountering when you choose the durability of your boot.

Choosing a proper hiking shoe or boot thats made for women can make a huge difference on your hiking trips. You will recognize the difference in fit, comfort, and durability when you purchase a shoe made for you!

When preparing for a hiking trip, one of the most important aspects to consider is nutrition on the trail. Nutritional packing will vary depending on the length and season of your trip, and also depending on your daily activities. The three main issues involved with hiking nutrition are quality of nutrients, weight and prep of food, and food cost. This article will provide tips on making the best selections for your trip.

Hiking meals should include a good mix of protein (20%), carbohydrate (50%), and fat sources (30%). Calorie dense food items are important as a typical hiker will need to consume 3,000 to 4,000 calories per day. Good sources of protein are dried/canned meats, nuts, and protein bars. Good sources of carbohydrates are rice, energy bars, and dried fruit. Good sources of fat will be nuts and butter. Dont forget to bring adequate hydration in water, juice, or sports drinks. The weight and prep time of this items is the next issue to consider.

Having a backpack weighed down by heavy food items will increase the calories you need for your hike. When considering what items to choose, feel their weight and imagine how they will fit into your pack. Dried goods, nutritional bars, and foods that do not need cookware will cut down on the weight of your pack. Extensive food prep can also waste energy and reduce the effectiveness of your food sources. In general food should be easy to carry and easy to eat! Hydration items can add significant weight to your pack. A water purification system can be considered to cut down to one reusable water bottle or camel pack.

Food cost should be considered if you plan on becoming a frequent hiker. Freeze-dried meals that are advertised for hiking trips can be very convenient, but their price is double or triple the cost of regular grocery items. Dont be afraid to use simple items such as candy bars, and bread.

It may take some trial and error to pick the most effective nutritional items for your hike. Remembering to focus on quality, weight/prep, and cost of food will make the process much simpler.

Many hikers have encountered dirt, water, and rocks in their boots during hiking trips. A great way to avoid this problem is to purchase a pair of hiking or boot gaiters. When youre looking for the right hiking gaiters, its important to consider fit, durability, and ease of use. This article will take a closer look at how to choose the right gaiters for you.

When youre looking at hiking gaiters, it will be important to bring your hiking boots to check the fit. A hiking gaiter should fit firmly onto the boot to adequately keep out the elements. When the gaiter is attached to the boot it should feel like one fluid unit. Also, check the comfort of the gaiters with your boots. They need to be comfortable since you will be wearing them all day! All day use will require that your hiking gaiters have excellent durability.

Hiking gaiters will be made out of different materials depending on the elements you plan to encounter. Good material choices for hiking gaiters are nylon and leather. They are waterproof and tough enough to withstand sharp rocks. Highly durable gaiters are an advantage because they can also serve as outdoor mats for gear. An easy to use set of hiking gaiters will also help you to use them in different ways.

A good hiking gaiter will be easy to attach and easy to remove. It should also be easy to remove the boot and gaiter as one connected piece when you are on a multiple day trip. Quick removal can be handy when you are using the gaiters as a mat or seat cover after a hike.

A great pair of hiking gaiters are an excellent way to keep the inside of your boots dry and clean. Focusing on fit, durability, and ease of use can help you choose the best pair. Dont forget to make them your own by also choosing a favorite color or design.

A GPS can be a great asset to your next hiking adventure. The three main criteria to consider when choosing a GPS are durability, GPS type, and mapping options. In this article I will explain the many different options that can enhance your next hike.

The most important thing to consider in your search is what kind of terrain you will be frequenting during your hikes. A quad helix GPS is great for heavy tree cover, while a flat patch GPS is better suited for open terrain. There are also chips that can be purchased to improve antenna performance in mixed terrain. After choosing the kind of GPS you want, you can select a durable long-lasting model.

There are a few different aspects of durability in a hiking GPS. You will want to choose a unit that can be dropped or exposed to moisture. You will also want to consider the length of battery life and what type of batteries the unit uses. Units using lithium batteries or a sleep mode will last longer. Antenna durability is important as well. Some units come with internal or detachable antennas. Once you’ve made sure that your GPS will make it through your hike, you can choose mapping options.

The price of mapping options will increase according to how many functions and storage they possess. If you are going to use topographical information you will need a color map. Monochrome maps can be used for simpler point plotting. The size of the screen and resolution will also be important in the readability of your maps. The higher the resolution, the more detail you will be able to see on your map. There would be no point in all of these criteria if in the end you could not read your maps!

A durable unit of the right type with great mapping options will be a great addition to your next hike. After customizing the criteria to your needs you will be able to find a few great hiking GPS units to choose from.
